Last month, the Volvo XC60 SUV earned the title of best performing large off-roader at the Euro NCAP 2017 Best in Class Safety Awards, while also taking home the honor as the vehicle with the best overall performance.

The XC60 nailed down a nearly-perfect score of 98 percent in the Adult Occupant category and in its Large Off-Road class, while also besting its class competitors by delivering a Safety Assist score of 95 percent -- 20 percentage points higher than its nearest rival.

The win continues a proud tradition of Volvo vehicles taking home top honors at the awards, as the XC90 previously had taken the Large Off-Roader and Best Overall Performance titles in 2015, and the V40 earned Small Family class honors.

The Volvo S90 and V90 sedans also scored highly at the Euro NCAP 2017 Best in Class Awards, earning a 95 percent score in the Adult Occupant category and 93 percent in the Safety Assist category.

In a press release, Malin Ekholm, Vice President, Volvo Cars Safety Centre, commented, "The new XC60 is one of the safest Volvo cars ever made. It is fully loaded with new technology designed to assist drivers, to help protect vehicle occupants and other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, plus mitigate collision risks. Our vision is that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. The achievements of the XC60 are examples of our commitment to developing the latest safety and support systems as we strive towards that vision."
